With festival season well and truly upon us, there’s only one thing we’re thinking about. Nope, it’s not the music, but the weird and wonderful make-up looks we’ll be able to create for our fun-filled days in the sun.
Thanks to the bright colours and daring outfits which go hand-in-hand with pretty much every festival, there’s no better time to be experimental with your make-up look. That said, hot tents and a lack of well-lit mirrors can often leave make-up application feeling a little tricky. It’s for that reason that we’ve been on the lookout for make-up trends that are not only strong and statement but super-easy to recreate.
And this year’s line-up is looking pretty hot. From starry eyes and marble-effect lips to rainbow shadow and holographic gems, 2019’s trends once again prove that colour really is everything. So say goodbye to festival make-up FOMO and hello to some mightily creative beauty looks, as professional make-up artist Anna Gibson reveals the seven trends you should trial this summer (and how to achieve them, obvs).

Like stars in the night sky, celestial make-up is a trend which is as mesmerising as it is hard to ignore. Celestial looks take inspiration from galactic colours (think pinks, blues and purples) and holographic textures to create something sparkly, ethereal and ever-so-slightly alien.
Luckily for us, the look at the centre of the celestial make-up trend is glitter or sequin dusted lids, which can be achieved simply by sweeping different takes on glitter across your eyes. Of course, you can devote a little more time to the cause and carefully place star-shaped sequins exactly where they need to be, but that’s not a necessity. You could also reach for a palette like the Pixi Glitter-y Eye Quad in Blue Pearl to achieve a celestial look sans messy loose glitter.
When it comes to applying glitter, we’re guessing we’re not alone in being advocates for the age-old lip gloss trick, but according to professional MUA Anna Gibson, that’s not the best way to ensure it stays all day. She said: “On a warm summer’s day, lip gloss will just start to slip down the face! Instead, I would reach for clear eyelash glue for amazing hold and more precise application. Apply the glue exactly where you want the glitter to stick, then use a clean finger or brush to gently dab on the glitter. Voila!” Oh, and remember to wash the glitter away with soap when you get back to your tent, she warned. That’ll avoid the glue clogging your pores as you sleep.
Holographic face jewels

If splashing glitter across your eyelids is not your cup of tea, there’s a whole host of other ways you can pay homage to the celestial make-up trend at your upcoming festival.
Face jewels are back with a bang this season, but for 2019, they’ve gone holographic. What you lack in technique you’ll certainly make up for in out-of-this-world style, because this make-up look requires absolutely no skill and approximately 10 seconds of your time.
Most face jewels come ready to apply to a clean face, but that clear eyelash glue you’re carrying can be used again to make sure they stay in place. Set your base with a translucent powder (like the Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder before applying the glue exactly where you want the gems to sit. Wait until the glue goes tacky and press them into place.
To finish your holographic festival make-up look, pair your face gems with smokey eyes, bold brows (IT Cosmetic’s Build-a-Brow is the perfect product for enhancing what your mamma gave you) and a shimmery pink lip. You’ll be turning heads until the end of the last set.

A strong swipe of neon on your eyelids might be all you need to be on trend with your make-up this festival season. Inspired by SS19 runways and Fenty’s latest beauty collection, the flouro green make-up trend is a welcome reminder that beauty is meant to be fun, and its vibrant and surprising nature means it goes hand-in-hand with festivals.
It’s okay if the thought of splashing super-bright shadows and lip colours across your face leaves you feeling a little freaked out. At first glance, it did us too – that was until we realised how deceptively easy it is to apply from the comfort of your own home (or sleeping bag). “It’s so summery and fun, and everyone can wear it!” says Anna.
If you want to go big, pair a neon green pigment with sun spots (achieved by pressing highlighter or white pigment into the inner-corner of your eyes), and consider painting (or sticking) neon stars onto your forehead à la Lottie Geliot. If subtlety is more your thing, you could experiment with a neon liner and delicate shapes. “How about a few graphic lines or dots across the lash line?” suggests Anna. “There are endless options for creativity!”

Move over marble nails, marble lips are taking the internet by storm this festival season. They’ve been having a serious moment of social media fame, and we’re here for it.
The most popular marble-effect lip colourway is white and grey – it sticks a middle finger up at colour (which we’re actually kind of loving) and can be achieved by applying a matte lipstick then swirling darker shades through to create the marble effect.
Anna says: “For the base colours, I would use cream based colour products like MAC Paint Sticks or Kryolan Paints. You could also mix pigments or a crushed eyeshadow with a mixing medium.” She continues: “Use a lip brush to carefully blend a few shades to give the marble effect, and to finish, add a few thin lines of glitter using an eyeliner brush dipped in loose glitter.”

Cue the Pride inspo, this bold and beautiful make-up trend is guaranteed to turn heads – and we promise it’s much simpler to create than it looks.
The key with using multiple shadow colours at once is to ensure they don’t smudge into each other. Anna says: “You’ll firstly want to use a good eye primer so that the colours set on application.” For amazing staying power, she recommends “Tarte Shape Tape Eye Primer, it’s great”.
“You’ll then want to use a clean brush to apply each colour”, Anna continues. Once you have the colours in the right place you can re-use the brushes for each colour to gently blend into the next section. If you don’t have that many brushes you could use clean fingertips to apply the colours and cotton buds to blend.” We guess it just depends how much you’re prepared to pack…
Really want your look to pop? Apply some fake lashes like the Tarte Tarteist Pro Lashes and you’ll be serving all-out drama.

Fun festival make-up trends might come and go, but if this round-up has taught us anything it’s that glitter is forever.
If you’ve over the glitter lids and are looking for a new way to don something sparkly, get on board with glitter brows: the effortless and fun trend which will look amazing in your festival selfies. Granted, glitter brows are unlikely to take off past the realms of the festival field, but that’s what makes it so great.
With this make-up look, the brows are most definitely the star of the show, and the rest of the face should remain fuss-free and plain. You want to make your brows look light, airy and washed out while being the showstoppers at the same time.
It all starts with a tinted brow gel in a lighter shade than your natural brow colour. This will wash your brows out. Anna adds: “I would then use a clear eyelash glue to carefully dab spots of glue onto the back of the gems or sequins and press them into your eyebrows.”
Glossy lilac eyes

Wet-look lavender eyes are the perfect choice if you favour soft and glamorous make-up looks which scream summer.
Glossy eyes are high-impact, easy to achieve and give you that lovely youthful glow you’ve always dreamed of (without requiring a tonne of highlighter and skill on your part). Anna agrees, adding: “This look is so easy to wear and flattering – it’s a total winner for this summer.”
To achieve this look, use a highly pigmented lilac eye shadow before applying a thin layer of lip balm or gloss over the top. Tarte’s H20 Gloss has an amazing prismatic effect. There are other products you can use to give you total vinyl-like levels of shine, but when you’re on a budget and living out of a rucksack, lip gloss is almost as good. From there, leave the look as it is or run a purple kohl eyeliner across the lash line and apply mascara (this one is perfect for a smoky look) in abundance for a “morning after the night before” vibe. Watch our glossy eyes tutorial if you want to see this look in action.
And there we have it: the seven hottest festival make-up trends of the summer. Now all that’s left to do is decide which one is your favourite… And be sure to watch our easy festival make-up tutorial if you’re still on the hunt for tips and tricks.
