While we’re all about embracing and loving what nature gave you, we’re also the first to despair on those days when our hair is just plain out of control. While some hair types are more prone to frizz than others – coarser, curly, Afro, thin flyaway or bleached strands experience it more than most – it always helps to have a few tips and products ready for an unexpected crazy hair day.
To find out what products we should have at hand, we asked Living Proof Ambassador Lotti Tyson for her hero products for smoothing out hair. In addition to her advice not to towel dry hair and sleep on a silk pillowcase to avoid unnecessary friction, Lotti recommends oil as your number one frizz-fighting agent, as it both “tames and conditions at the same time”. She also advocates using a priming formula on wet hair to help smooth and block humidity. However she also says know when to admit defeat and let nature take its course: “When it’s super humid outside, embrace the frizz by using conditioning, styling products that enhance the curl or wave”.
Armed with Lotti’s recommendations, we rounded up the products perfect for maintaining smooth, manageable hair.
An absolute hero product for hair that reacts to humidity, Dream Coat creates a water-resistant cloak around every strand, shielding your hair from any moisture in the air. Just liberally coat still-wet hair with this treatment after washing, comb through and then blow dry (it's heat-activated).
Perfect if you're short on time, this deep-cleansing shampoo also hydrates by penetrating deeply into hair fibres to restore and impart high levels of moisture. Packed with nature's ingredients, it's fueled with fruit extracts, plus shea and coconut oil.
Oils are your best friend when it comes to smoothing frizz, and the Living Proof oil earns its stripes. Not only is it silicone-free and fast-absorbing, it's also preventative, with molecules to block humidity. For use on dry or wet hair, it's one to keep close at hand at all times.
A bit of a wonder product for damaged, dry and brittle hair, this balm contains soothing,
nature-powered ingredients: red clay and raw maracuja oil, that smooth and seal broken hair cuticles. It's super-versatile and can be used pre-shampoo, as an overnight mask, or as a pre-styling creme.
Nightmare hair can be tamed before washing with a pre-shampoo treatment, and Philip Kingsley's is one of the best out there. Originally created for Audrey Hepburn when constant styling was damaging her hair, it gives your hair bounce, vitality and smoothness, and is great for any hair type.
