With the start of the year well and truly come and gone, we’re ready to wish winter goodbye and welcome in longer, brighter days. Although we’re not quite there yet, we’re already looking forward to the season ahead and the new trends that come with it. Nails are an easy way to keep your look fresh and nod to new colours and trends. And, with spring just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to refresh your look.
We spoke to CEO and founder of Nails Inc Thea Green about the up-and-coming nail colours and trends of the season, so you can stay ahead of the curve and be the first to sport spring nails that are bang on trend for 2019.
The Colours of the Season
Sunshine yellow emerges as one of the favourite colours of the season for SS19, and Thea considers this a welcome change from the array of muted shades seen last year: ‘bright, happy and zesty, whilst the millennial pink fatigue has really set in, this colour feels fresh and current for the new season,’ she says. This bold hue was seen on the catwalk, with Theacommenting that ‘Tibi went punchy with their yellow nail art, which ties in so well with our hero yellow shade.’ Vibrant and confident, this colour could be just the pick-me-up that your look needs in the drab weather leading up to spring.
Named Pantone colour of the year, Coral is pegged as another winner this spring, and according to Thea, you can go as soft or as bold as you like. ‘Peach is splashed across the catwalk this season along with nudes and soft pinks, with the likes of Temperley and Stella McCartney showing off the light pink trends beautifully, as well as Gucci who decided to wash the models’ nails in a more typical subtle naked nude.’ With a spectrum of peach and coral shades to choose from, from barely-there nudes to vibrant red tones, the choice of how to rock this trend is yours.
If vibrant nails colours really aren’t your bag, incorporate these brighter shades into your nail art for a subtle on-trend touch of colour.
Trends in technique
Trends in nail effects change as quickly as colours do, and SS19 is no exception. According to Thea, last year it was all about holographic top coats and crystal manicures, but for this spring, we can expect to see something a little more streamlined and minimalistic. ‘We definitely feel that negative space nails are where it’s at for this season,’ she shares.
If you’re wondering what negative space nails are, they’re created by only partially painting the nail to allow some of your natural nail to show too. The result is a geometric design that looks chic and minimalistic. Negative space nail art is fairly simple to do, as it requires only a colour you love and nail stickers or tape that you peel off once your nail polish is dry, so this trend is good news for those who aren’t gifted with a steady hand. Plus, for those who don’t want to spend the time (or money) at the salon, there’s an array of nail-effect kits to make doing it yourself even easier. This particular technique slots in beautifully with the bolder colours of spring 2019.
The good news is that shorter, rounded nails are still backed by experts as the trend continuing on from last year, which means less maintenance for your mani, but Thea stresses that it’s still as important as ever to get the foundations of your nail care right: ‘Keeping your mani and pedi immaculate is always essential to us; this never changes.’
To get the basics down, she recommends a nail oil like Superfood Repair Oil to condition your cuticles and keep your nails looking neat and tidy; ‘It really preps your nails the right way if you truly want to achieve an immaculate mani or pedi.’ Since springtime doesn’t necessarily mean goodbye to cold weather, a good nail oil is an essential to keep your nails and the skin around them moisturised and growing out strong from the base upwards, even when you’re wearing polish.
So stay at the forefront this season and use fresh, juicy brights and bold nail art and, as ever, nail care remains at the forefront of your manicure. But whatever your style, there’s a way that you can incorporate these trends into your look. Go for minimalistic nail art with just a hint of vibrancy for a chic update, or go for a full splash of colour to really commit to the new spring shades.
